THE POWER OF SONG
This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen at a Folk Festival it was called The Home Brew Sing – I think, and was at The Auckland Folk Festival It was open to everyone and we all stood around a central point and sang whatever song the person in the centre was singing. When they’d finished someone else leapt into the centre and without pause we would all join in. The camaderie and sheer love for the singing was intense. People sang into each other’s faces and moved towards a harmony or spontaneously layered another group of voices. Meanwhile people went round with flagons of free home brewed beer. As much as I like instrumental sessions common to British Folk festivals, they can often be very exclusive events for the more experienced players, leaving those who aren’t in the clique outside the circle. There was no danger of that here. Everyone had a voice and everyone was heard loud and late into the night.
